The Origins of Fado

Evolution and recognition

Fado started to evolve into a more structured musical style in the late 19th and early 20th century. Maria Severa, a legendary figure in fado history, rose to prominence at this time. Severa, who is well-known for her tavern singing, is frequently given responsibility for bringing fado to Portugal’s aristocracy, because of her connection to the Count of Vimioso. Severa died when she was only 26 years old, her premature death helped spread the mystic of Fado as a music style of longing and mystery.
